Days 65 & 66 - Back to school and STRIKE!

So the reason this post is a double post is twofold (heh heh. See what I did there?) On the one hand, I had to catch up on all the posts of the cruise as well as edit and add pictures to them before they were fit for this blog. The other is the fact that not a lot happened today or yesterday. Yesterday was marginally better than today, but it was mainly filled with school.

Actually, one of my classes was the main topic I had planned for the day. Alright, this class is over circuits, signals, and systems. Luckily we got through the easy part of circuits early, but that also means that now we're on the hard parts. Actually, we have the better set up than the people back home. Due to the fact that our class is so small and we've become much closer with our teacher, we don't feel weird going to her for constant help or asking for clarification or even just saying "we don't understand...that entire thing you just went through." Back home, it's infinitely harder because on top of this already hard subject, they are in a much larger setting and don't know their teacher as well. Anyway, yesterday we were going through signals and systems, and our teacher showed us an equation. This got "simplified" into a larger equation, which was then transformed and moved around into a super ugly, long, monstrous equation. Seriously, this thing had to be in two separate lines on the powerpoint. Now, to get this next bit, you have to understand that by the class was halfway done, I had been steadily growing more and more confused and generally afraid for the upcoming test because I did not understand what was being said, like it was in another language. And not German, because I'm getting a better grasp on that, but a language from outer space. Anyway, by the time the super ugly, long, monstrous equation came up, I don't know who started it, but someone started softly laughing. And then another, and another until half the room was giggling. I'm pretty sure that this was a coping mechanism for those of us who have not taken Differential Equations yet (a pre-/corequisite to this class) and are trying to learn that class in a short time period without the benefit of an actual class to teach it to us.

Anyway, after that class I Skyped my parents because I haven't talked to them for over a week and I wanted to tell them about the cruise. We also got to sign up for the optional hike this Sunday, figured out who would be on our soccer teams for the AIB tournament this Wednesday, and got info on the trip to Bayer that we'll be taking Wednesday as well...which is tomorrow. I went home and gave a plate that I painted on the cruise to my host family and spent some time with them before going up to bed to sleep. Luckily, the next day was a super late class, so I could sleep in almost as late as I wanted.

Today, I woke up to the sun and upon looking at my phone, found out that my classes had all been cancelled. Why you may ask? Well, public transport decided today was a good day to go on strike in Bonn, so only 10% of the buses/trams were running. One person made it to class on time for the Pharmacology class, so Kristin let us know that everything was going to be rescheduled for a different day. I would have gone into AIB anyway to get some work done there, but it's an even longer trek walking from my home to AIB than it is taking the tram, so I stayed home and worked a little bit on homework as well as relaxed. When my host mom came home, we talked (she was at a friend's house yesterday) and she told me about her party Saturday that I had missed because I was in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea at the time. I told her about my week, and we all ate dinner together before watching TV for a few hours before I went up to bed and started writing this post.

Tomorrow is the trip to Bayer and the AIB soccer tournament, so that will be really interesting to go to. Sorry, no pictures today.

Ciao!
Erin Z
