Day 86 & 87 - Normalcy Returns and I Sty with my Little Eye

Sorry. I really thought I had kicked the habit of doing double days. Luckily, not much happened yesterday, which was really nice. For once, we had a regular class without the stress-induced Otto Bock deign meetings in History of Medicine or last-ditch efforts to study for an upcoming test. It helped that none of our classes were a part of the first block and we could sleep in a little bit. I went into town a little bit early so I could snag some earbuds before class, but it wasn't open before my first class, so I showed up to school early yet again. Classes weren't that bad, just some regular History of Med and Signals class and all that goes along with it. It was really weird to have a History of Med class that actually focused on History of medicine instead of the Otto Bock project. However, those were the only classes for the day, so when we finished, I finally got some new earbuds so I can listen to music or other things.

When I went into the media markt, there were a lot of headphones and in-ear earbuds, but I wanted the regular earbuds as headphones are too big and in-ear's are not comfortable for me. Not to mention, they mess up my internal voice when I sing along to songs, which I do a lot. After scouring the shelves and inferring what the signs said, I finally found some that I liked (the last pair too!) and got them. I spent the rest of my day relaxing in the chair at AIB to rest my screaming legs from the marathon the day before and listened to music or worked on homework. I went back to my host home at the end of the day, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. I was able to finish up some business and even talk to my parents. Just before I went to bed, I noticed that my eye was hurting a little bit if I put even the slightest amount of pressure on it. Luckily, I determined through a series of crude but effective tests that it was my lid that was bothering me and not the eye and though it bothered me a little bit, I felt sure that it would feel better in the morning after a good nights rest.

It didn't. The first thing I noticed when I woke up was that something wasn't right and my left eye felt heavy and stiff for some reason. When I ignored the scolding of my legs enough to actually get up and look in the mirror, I was shocked to see that the entire eyelid was puffed up. Luckily it wasn't bad enough to obscure my sight, but it was very noticeable and didn't look that good. Like last night, it didn't hurt except with pressure, but it looked so much worse. Since it wasn't actually bothering me, I got dressed with the warm weather in mind and even put on some sunglasses so that people wouldn't stare at me throughout my journey to school. When I got to school, my eye was immediately noted by everyone and the student worker at the front desk wanted to know if I wanted to see a doctor. Since it wasn't bothering me that much and I thought that it'd go away soon enough, I said I'd wait for a while to see if it went down naturally. However, after the first class it got to be really annoying and with everyone concerned that it would be a bad infection, I talked with Kristin and she said she would call a doctor that I could hopefully see later that day.

The next class was design, which mainly consisted of working on the DHF that's due tomorrow at midnight. When that class finished, I asked about the doctors appointment before leaving for lunch, but the doctor they normally used was not in his office at that time, so I had to wait until they responded to set up an appointment. When I came back from lunch, most of us started working on homework or playing the game Catan. I decided to watch the game for a little bit, but not long in a student worker came in and said she had gotten me an appointment at the eye doctor's...in 10 minutes time. Naturally, I left immediately and she followed me to show me where the office was and stayed with me throughout the entire process. I'm really thankful to her because she was able to translate everything for me and made sure that I had everything I needed. While we waited for the doctor to see me, we talked about anything that came to mind. When I was called in, the doctor sat me down, looked at my eye and poked at the eyelid, moving it around at one point to look at the eye beneath it. Not 2 minutes later, she put away everything and told me that I had a sty that needed to be treated. She gave me a prescription for a cream I have to wear every day for a week and we left the office...5 minutes after I entered. Man, German health care is awesome!

Just look at how upset they are...except Kelsey. She found as much amusement from this as I did

I payed for the visit and left to go back to AIB, picking up my medicine at the pharmacy on the way back. When I walked back into the classroom, everyone was really nice and wanted to know what happened. I told them before settling back into my seat to work on homework. Meanwhile, the Catan group was still playing the same game, which was surprising because I had been gone for about 45 minutes, which was a reasonable amount of time to finish a game. Instead, no one seemed close to winning and I repeatedly heard frustrated noises from their table. I eventually went over, and started laughing at the antics that were going on. Everyone was lamenting the terrible board set up and the "uncommon" numbers that were repeatedly rolled. No one had enough cards to trade for the resources they wanted, so no one could advance their civilization enough to gain an advantage. I even took a picture of how frustrated they were at the longest game they had ever played. This game lasted for another 2 hours, making it an abnormally long game. When someone finally won, it wasn't a source of envy or anger like normal, but of relief and thanks that someone ended the slow game.

Of course, by this time it was really late and I had to hurry home. Just as I was walking home, it started to rain and a wind that had been growing colder throughout the day kicked up, slicing through my thin throw-over and my most summer-like shirt to make me cold. When I got to the house, I ate with my family and hung out for a while before heading up to my room. Tomorrow is a really easy day with only one class (lab was cancelled) and we'll be using it to finish the DHF. Also, class registration is starting up in two days, so that will be a whole barrel of fun. Also, hopefully my eye gets better as I don't like having a puffed up lid.

Till next time,
Erin Z
