Day 10 - Cake making

So, just like yesterday, today was a very chill day without a lot of exciting goings on. We did have class cancelled for BMEN design though, Sarah said it was to make sure that we didn't get too far ahead of our A&M counterparts (who had MLK day yesterday in the States), but I don't really get it as we have a lot of trips and stuff later on that will force us to skip class and the schedule we made guaranteed that we had the same number of classes that covered the same amount of material. Anyway, before that revelation was German class. I always like that class, our teacher takes a very hands on approach to teaching us and makes us say and repeat things in German a lot. She has this little ball that gets passed from student to student, the thrower asking a question and the receiver answers it before throwing it to another student until everyone is accounted for. And if we come up with something that we haven't covered yet, she goes into a mini lesson on what it means, how to say it, and how it's conjugated (I feel like I'm in Spanish class all over again sometimes with the conjugations.) Today we also finished up the emergency "help me" packet that provided a lot of useful info for getting around Germany. Next time we meet, we all are bringing something to be shared with the rest of the class for breakfast and we'll be given a packet with the names for food and only be able to speak in German. I have a feeling it's going to be a quiet meal.

After that, a lot of us got to working on our homework due both tonight and later on this week. I actually got a lot more homework done today, I only have a few more questions and I'll be done for the week! That is, until Thursday when I'll be getting even more homework. Sometime after lunch, a lot of us got together to try and decide where we wanted to go when. We decided to go to Italy during spring break so we can visit Cicily, Rome, and all the things that we wanted to see. We also worked out that we wanted to go to Paris over Easter Sunday because we're given such a long weekend (4 days) and that would allow us to see everything in Paris. And we might be going to a concert of the Bee Gee's that will be in Bonn the last day of finals, but that wasn't completely worked out yet.

When I got back home, I smelled something baking. Now, tomorrow is Annette's birthday, so I knew that Marie and Sophie were making something for her for tomorrow's party. Unfortunately, I was too late to help make it, but I was still in time to help decorate the cake with all sorts of goodies. When the cake came out of the oven I saw a cake made of some kind of bread that I have not tried yet that had a bunch of berries as the filling. We made a powdered sugar glue for some candy hearts that are equally spaced around the cake with her age in the middle and hearts and other decorations drawn on the cake. It was a lot of fun to make! Tomorrow there will be a party, and I'll try to be there as early as I can, but tomorrow I unfortunately have class (a lab on the device we're making for Atto Bock) until about 5, so I may be a little late to the party.

After the cake was taken care of, Sophie and Marie dragged me over to play WiiSing with them and we lasted until about 9:30, at which point they were told to go to bed. I must admit that I followed their lead as I have breakfast with the mayor tomorrow starting at about 9. I need to meet with the rest of the group at about 8:30. That means I need to wake up at a rather early time for me to compensate for morning activities and walking to my tram stop. Unfortunately, I have no pictures from today, but I think I will put up some from the first few days of the countryside that I haven't shown yet. Hope you enjoy!

  1. Hi Erin!
I love reading your daily accounts. And it sounds like you are having tons of fun. I'm glad you are doing as much as you are and making plans to visit other cultures.
AND - you HAVE to see the Bee Gees! They were one of my favorite groups back in the day!
    Love ya! Mom
